SIMEDHealth is proud to announce that we have a new psychologist joining our team! Carmen Tozzo, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist who is fluent in both English and Spanish. She will start seeing patients in our Chiefland location in January. We talked to Dr. Tozzo about her background, her training in becoming a psychologist, and what she likes to do in her free time.

Why did you choose to become a psychologist?

I became interested in psychology as an undergraduate at the University of Iowa when I took a class in Behavioral Psychology. I particularly appreciate the evidence-based and scientific roots of this field. Afterward, I worked in the labs of the experimental psychologist, Dr. Isaacson, and clinical psychologist, Dr. Cynthia Belar, at the University of Florida. From those experiences, I knew I wanted to make this my life work.

After finishing your studies, what additional training did you do to become a psychologist?

Following graduate school, I completed my internship at Boston University Medical Center, a postdoctoral fellowship in Behavioral Medicine also at Boston University, and then a second fellowship in Neuropsychology at a hospital affiliate of Brigham's and Women's Hospital.

What conditions are you able to diagnose and treat?

I evaluate and provide care for patients with all types of mental health conditions, including but not limited to depression, anxiety, post-trauma, cognitive assessments, and stress-related disorders.

How would you describe your manner when talking with a patient?

My training and theoretical approach is cognitive-behavioral therapy, and I take a collaborative approach to treatment. On the outset, my clients and I discuss goals for treatment.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Out of the office, I enjoy spending time with friends and family. I enjoy outdoor activities. I am an avid cave-diver and recently completed advanced training in this area.

What are you most looking forward to now that you've joined SIMEDHealth?

I am looking forward to collaborating and working with a great group of doctors, advanced care practitioners, and psychologists at SIMEDHealth. The energy and professionalism of the people I have met is contagious.
